Ma Bufang Mansion is also known as Fragrant Cottage. Mr. Ma Bufang, an important historic figure in the era of the Republic of China, cannot be easily ignored and forgotten. He was the then Governor of Qinghai Province, a native northwestern Chinese person with the strongest forces, the most widely ruled area, the largest influence and the highest official rank in the era of the Republic of China. At age 12, Mr. Ma Bufang assumed the position of staff officer and held the rank of Major in the Office of Defense Commissioner of Ninghai Army in Xining City. He never accepted formal school education, so he could not accurately read telegrams, but he had a strong sense of self-esteem and was always ambitious for remarkable achievements. He also had a strong concept of power centralization and acted arbitrarily. However, he strictly abided by Sharia and always worshiped on time.

Ma Bufang Mansion, is a private residence, was first built in 1942 and completed in the next year, costing 30,000,000 Dayang. There are many jade decorated on the wall, thus is called Jade Mansion. Ma Bufang Mansion consists of several courtyards, different kinds of houses and gardens. Each courtyard is arranged orderly and structured compact, forming a harmonious entity. Ma Bufang Mansion is a building of Republic of China which has been remained intact in Qinghai Province, and is the only building which is constructed by jade. In 1986, Ma Bufang Mansion has been defined as the Provincial protected cultural relics because of its historical value and local cultural characteristics. In 2007, Ma Bufang Mansion was chosen to be a National 4-A Level Tourist Scenic Spot.
